Responsiblities
Please read and understand the below responsibilities of being part of the band program. You are welcome to contact the Music Committee music@bps.org.au if you have any questions.
Student attendance
Students are expected to attend all rehearsals unless they are not attending school on the day of rehearsal. If your child is unwell and cannot make it to their rehearsal, please send an email to the Band Conductor at office@keymusicaustralia.com.au.
It is important that band rehearsals start on time.
Commitment
Joining a band is an important commitment. We ask that once a student has committed to the Band, that they continue for at least half the year as it can take time to learn a new instrument and get used to the routine of rehearsals.
Should you wish to discontinue, notice needs to be given to your conductor. Please note fees for instrument hire apply for the full half year and will not be refunded for partial periods.
Music Lessons
All students in the band are required to have private music lessons. Please see our Music Lessons page for more information.
Instruments
All students and parents are responsible for their own instrument or hired instrument. For events/performances outside of the school, students/parents are required to organise their own setup and transport of instruments. This is important especially for percussion and keyboard players. The school drum kit and keyboards may need (on occasion) to be transported to events. Assistance with organisation will be given, however the Conductor and other parents are not responsible for your child’s instrument.
Music stands
All students must own a music stand for practice at home and for use at events/performances outside of the school. Many festivals require band members to take their own music stands to rehearsals and performances.
Parent support
The Band Program is an extra-curricular activity run by the P&C Music Committee made up by volunteer parents. Our program relies on the support of parents to run efficiently. Parental assistance is required to assist with:
Transporting equipment to performances
Fundraising
Backstage supervision of children at larger events
Parents are welcome to join the Music Committee to assist with the management of the Music Program. Formal roles include Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Band Coordinator, Instrument Coordinator & Events Coordinator, however we are open to parents being able to assist in any way they can. We are always looking for friendly faces to join the team. Contact us if you are interested.
Student behaviour
Students are expected to behave as they would in the classroom.
Examples of unacceptable behaviour include:
Talking or playing whilst the conductor is talking
Verbal or physical abuse of others
Distracting other students during rehearsal
Misuse of instruments or equipment
Should a student's behaviour be unacceptable the following procedures will take place:
Conductor reminds student of the behaviour expectations.
Conductor reminds student of expectations and student will be asked to stand up until they are ready to comply with the expectation.
If the behaviour continues, the student will again be reminded of the expectations and will be asked to sit in time out for a short period. A record of behaviour will be noted and the student's parents will be notified.
Should disruptive behaviour still continue, the student will be told to sit out the remainder of the rehearsal.
Should unacceptable behaviour continue across multiple rehearsals, the student may be removed from the Band to ensure a productive environment for the other students. If this is required, the student's parents will be notified. Note that no fees would be refunded and any hired instruments must be returned to the school immediately.
